The Art of the Heirloom: Legacy Craftsmanship for Central Oklahoma
How Traditional Joinery and Precision Engineering Create Furniture Built for Generations
For over 30 years, I’ve sat down with families across Central Oklahoma, from the historic homes in Mesta Park to the sprawling estates in Gaillardia, and the conversation always starts the same way. You aren't just looking for a table or a desk, you’re looking for a centerpiece that can handle the reality of your life.
When I started Graeber Design, I made a promise to myself and my clients: I will never build disposable furniture. If it has my name on it, it’s built to be a legacy. To do that, I rely on time-honored woodworking techniques that most big box retailers abandoned decades ago in favor of speed and profit.
Here is a look at how I build furniture that is meant to last a lifetime, and why those details matter for your home.
1. It Starts with Masterful Joinery
The secret to a piece of furniture that doesn't wobble or creak after five years is in the joinery. While mass produced pieces are held together by staples and cam locks, I use mechanical joints that rely on the strength of the wood itself.
Mortise and Tenon is the gold standard for my table frames and chair legs. I cut a tenon on one piece and a perfectly matched mortise in the other. When these are glued and fitted, they create a bond that is physically superior to any screw or nail.
If you look at the drawers in a Graeber Design custom dresser or desk, you’ll see interlocking wedge shapes. These are dovetails. They are physically impossible to pull apart from the front, ensuring your drawer faces never fall off, no matter how many times they’re opened.
3. Hand Selected Hardwoods
I don't work with particle board, or mystery woods. When you commission a piece from me, we talk about the soul of the wood. I personally source premium, kiln-dried North American hardwoods:
Black Walnut: For that deep, sophisticated chocolate tone.
White Oak: My top recommendation for a lot of modern styles, because it is incredibly dense and moisture resistant.
Cherry & Mahogany: For clients who want a warm, timeless patina that actually looks better as it ages.
2. Engineering for the Oklahoma Swing
If you live in Oklahoma City, Edmond, or Tulsa, you know our weather is anything but consistent. Wood is a living, breathing material. When our humidity spikes in July and drops in January, wood expands and contracts.
If a maker builds a table too tightly, the wood will eventually crack or warp under the pressure. I engineer every piece with seasonal movement in mind. I use floating tabletops that allow the wood to breathe across its grain. It’s a bit of extra engineering, but it’s why my tables stay flat and beautiful while others might fail.
4. A Finish That Lives with You
I’m often asked, "Will this stain if I spill red wine?" or "Do I need to worry about water rings?" My answer is always a confident no. I use professional-grade, high-performance finishes that are life-proof. I’ve spent years perfecting a finish that is:
Water-Repellent: Moisture beads up rather than soaking in.
Stain-Resistant: Spills from coffee or wine wipe away with ease.
Durable: It’s tough enough to resist daily scuffs but thin enough that you can still feel the natural, organic texture of the wood grain.
I call it my Wipe and Go philosophy. You should be able to enjoy your dinner party without hovering over your guests with a coaster.
The Graeber Design Experience
When we work together, you’re not just a line item on a spreadsheet. Whether you're in Norman, Stillwater, or right here in Edmond, I walk you through every step:
The Consultation: We talk about your space, your style, and how you’ll actually use the piece.
The Design: I provide the sketches and renderings that combine your vision with my 30 years of structural engineering.
The Build: I handcraft the piece in my Edmond workshop using the techniques we’ve discussed.
The Delivery: My crew will install the piece in your home to make sure it’s perfect. We’ll even give it a good polish!
I’m William Graeber, and I’d love to build something for you that your grandkids will one day argue over who gets to keep.

A Note of Gratitude
Before we get to work on your next project, I want to take a moment to look back. Over the last three decades, I’ve had the privilege of being invited into thousands of homes across Central Oklahoma. To my past clients in Oklahoma City, Edmond, Tulsa, and every town in between: thank you. Many of you have trusted me with more than just a furniture order; you’ve trusted me with your family’s history. Seeing the photos you send years later, of kids doing homework on or three generations gathered around a dining table, is the greatest reward I could ask for. Your support has allowed me to keep this craft alive in an age of automation, and for that, I am truly grateful.
To those of you considering Graeber Design for the first time, thank you for the opportunity to earn your business. I know that commissioning a custom piece is a significant investment and a leap of faith. I appreciate the time you’ve taken to learn about my process and my commitment to quality. Whether we end up working together or I simply help point you in the right direction for your home, I am honored to be a part of your search for something better.
I look forward to the possibility of building something exceptional for you.
Warmly,
William Graeber
