From Sawdust to Legacy: The 30 Year Journey of William Graeber
In an era of fast furniture and disposable home goods, William Graeber is a bit of an anomaly. Based in Edmond, Oklahoma, the craftsman behind Graeber Design has spent over three decades proving that furniture shouldn't just fill a space, it should tell a story.
From his early days in a high school woodshop to becoming one of the most respected names in custom furniture in Oklahoma, William’s journey is a masterclass in persistence, artistry, and engineering.
An Unlikely Spark: The Edmond North Beginnings
William’s story doesn’t start in a design studio, but rather in a classroom at Edmond North Mid High. What began as a standard elective quickly became an obsession. While other teenagers were focused on the weekend, William was falling in love with the tactile nature of timber and the precision of power tools.
By age 19, he was already building professionally. By 23, he had established a reputation in Central Oklahoma for high-level repair and custom builds. In 1996, he officially opened Wm. Graeber Designs in Oklahoma City, a shop that handled everything from delicate antique restoration to the repair of professional stringed instruments.
Engineering for the Oklahoma Swing
One of the most unique aspects of William’s work is his focus on furniture engineering. Oklahoma’s climate is notoriously brutal on wood; the extreme swings between humid summers and dry winters can cause poorly made furniture to warp, crack, or split.
Having spent 30 years at the bench, William understands the breath of wood. He utilizes traditional joinery, including hand cut dovetails and mortise and tenon joints, rather than the cheap screws and staples found in big box stores. This allows the wood to move naturally with the seasons while maintaining its structural integrity for generations.
"To me, furniture design and construction is still an art form. We take pride in carrying on the traditions of putting pencil to paper, sketching ideas, engineering parts, and putting together pieces the world has never seen before." — William Graeber
The Signature Style: Quality You Can See
When you commission a piece from Graeber Design, you aren't just getting a table; you're getting a curated selection of the finest American hardwoods. William’s process is defined by:
Continuous Grain Sequencing: Carefully matching planks so the natural pattern of the wood flows seamlessly across the entire piece.
Sustainable Sourcing: Prioritizing high grade Black Walnut, White Oak, and Cherry sourced from the Oklahoma/Texas region.
Life-Proof Finishes: Utilizing chemical free, water-repellent, and stain resistant finishes that stand up to the reality of family life.
A Multi-Faceted Artist
William’s eye for design is bolstered by his life outside the shop. A lifelong musician, songwriter, and painter, he treats every furniture commission like a piece of fine art. This interdisciplinary approach is why his work is frequently sought out by top interior designers for high-end residential and commercial projects across the state.
Bring a Legacy Home
Today, Graeber Design operates out of a specialized shop in North Edmond, serving as Oklahoma’s premier supplier of handcrafted solid wood furniture. Whether it’s a 12-foot dining table or a custom executive desk, William’s mission remains the same: to build something that your grandchildren will one day fight over.
